Standing Position While in the Lift

Have you wonder where or how you should stand while you are in the lift?

Commonly, we will step into the lift and turn 180 degrees and facing back at the lift’s door. If it is very crowded in the lift, at most we will stand sideways, having our backs facing the side of the lift.

Why nobody would stand with their back facing the door, and face facing inside the lift?

No matter how pack is the lift, if the space is only left for 1 last person to step in, this person for sure will turn around and have the back facing the rest of the passengers, and face towards the door that you could almost kissed.

Lift and direction

Seems like the business district and office towers/buildings are getting taller and more advance in technology, such as energy saving office environment, water friendly washroom, and of course intelligent lifts to carry passenger to their designated floor.

Some building comes with single/multiple lift(s), single/multiple lift lobby(ies), lifts positioned in a straight lines or facing each other in a two lines position.

Those lifts placed in a straight line position is easy, because whichever lift you go into, if your office is on the right wing of the building, when you step out from the lift, your office will be always on your right. No big deal, end of story.

Tricky part is, if your office’s lifts are facing each other, in a two lines position. Due to this, you will not only utilize the lift on one side, but both sides, which also alter the direction of your office.

It could be confusing, because so many direction changes once you stepped into your office lobby, for example, 90 degrees turn into lift lobby, another 90 degrees turn into the lift, 180 degrees turn to face yourself towards the lift’s door (will talk about this more next) while it is taking you to your desired floor, another 90 degrees turn towards your office doorstep. A whopping 450 degrees (or more in different office design) of turning that you made just to go to work. And that is a lot of hard work!

Of my observations, many got confused and don’t know their way round to their office once they stepped out of the lift, because it look the same from both side, then they will do the Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance! Head turn left right, shoulder turn left right, body turn left right, hee hee!

If you are new to the building, that is completely fine! But if you have been there working for a long time, and you still having a hard time identify the direction to your office. Here are some tips might be useful for you:

Sun Tan

After I had a satisfying lunch on a hot and sunny day, walking towards my office while enjoying the view of busy people walking/rushing around the area of Masjid Jamek, I saw something which I couldn’t understand.

Five dressed formally ladies walked out of Masjid Jamek LRT station, and across to OCBC Bank building, and squeezed into three umbrellas, just to avoid the hot sun.

I totally understand what is the feeling standing/walking under the hot sun in the middle of busy city in a tropical country in Malaysia.

I totally understand for those who have sensitive skin and couldn’t expose to hot sun because the skin condition would get worse, irritate, itchy, etc…

I totally understand being woman who take care of their skin very much, willing to spend tremendous amount of money on skin care products just to keep their skin silky smooth, glowing healthy looking skin, and try their level best to avoid the brutal sun to destroy their skin.

I totally understand having your make up on your face, a hot and sunny day will ruin your make up. Make up products are expensive, reapply will take time, time equals to money.

I was walking not far behind these five ladies, I counted my steps from the place they deployed their umbrellas until they keep their umbrella away. And the number of steps taken for me to walk is…

Smile :)

I don’t know all of my colleagues that worked with me in the same company, but one thing for sure that is I’ll greet or smile or nod my head just to acknowledge their present within the office, or even within the same office building.

No particular reason for doing this, but one thing I found strange is, where I had experienced many times, that people looked away or avoid greeting their colleague in office. I understand if you are out on the street, it would be best not to talk to stranger, or even smile at stranger.

Once in the office, I was walking towards the pantry/photocopy machine/washroom, on coming is one of the colleague that I have seen many times, despite not knowing the name, I look straight into this person’s eyes as I’m walking and smile/greet/nod my head.

This person sees my eye contact and quickly looked down and dashed away!

I don’t feel disrespectful or stupid, I was wondering do I have anything weird on my appearance, so immediately I went to the washroom and first thing I check on myself the zip on my pants, did I left it unzipped and something left hanging there? No. No giant spider on my head, negative ink stained on my shirt’s pocket. A quick check ran from head to toes and I was completely fine by appearance.
